The Haunted combines the sounds of 1980s Bay Area thrash metal acts like Metallica and Forbidden, as well as Los Angeles thrash metal bands Slayer and Dark Angel, with the local Swedish death metal stylings of such bands as Dark Tranquillity. There is also some influences of hardcore punk, mainly in the vocals.
The band released their first album, The Haunted, in 1998. After the release of this album, Peter Dolving and Adrian Erlandsson both left the band, the latter joining UK black metal purveyors Cradle of Filth. Marco Aro was recruited as a new vocalist and Per Möller Jensen as drummer. Their second album The Haunted Made Me Do It, released in 2000, was more melodic and resembled the "Gothenburg" style (At the Gates, etc) more than old-school thrash metal. They subsequently released their live album Live Rounds In Tokyo (2001) packaged with a reissue of The Haunted Made Me Do It. In August 2001, Anders Björler left the band and he was replaced by Marcus Sunesson The Crown for The Haunted's headlining tour, in less than a year Anders Björler returned to the band. The next album was released in February of 2003 and was titled One Kill Wonder. Marco Aro left the band in the fall of 2003 and original vocalist Peter Dolving rejoined.
Their newest album rEVOLVEr was released in October of 2004. The Haunted are currently writing their next studio album which is tentatively scheduled to be released in October 2006.
They have no connection with a 1960s garage rock band of the same name, from Montreal, who put out an album and several singles.
