The Indianapolis Star

Encyclopedia : T : TH : THE : The Indianapolis Star

The Indianapolis Star is a daily newspaper which began publishing on June 6, 1903.

It began as a morning daily paper in competition with two other Indianapolis dailies, the Indianapolis Journal and the Indianapolis Sentinel, which it eventually took over. In 1948, The Star owner Eugene C. Pulliam purchased rival evening paper the Indianapolis News. In 1999, The News ceased publication, leaving The Star as the only major daily paper in Indianapolis. The Star was acquired by Gannett in 2000 [link].

The Star has won the Pulitzer Prize twice for investigative reporting. In 1975, The Star was honored for its 1974 series on corruption within the Indianapolis Police Department. It was cited again in 1991 for its 1990 series on medical malpractice.
