The Inscription of Mes

Encyclopedia : T : TH : THE : The Inscription of Mes

The inscription of Mes is a carved inscription on the walls of the 18th Dynasty tomb-chapel of the royal butler, Ipay. The tomb was re-used by the royal scribe and steward, Mes, probably during the reign of Ramesses II in the 19th Dynasty. It is located at Northern Dahshur in Egypt, 2 km north of the Red Pyramid.

The tomb was found by a joint expedition of the universities of Waseda and Tokai in 1998 using Arial photo recon. It is the first New Kingdom tomb found at Dashur.

The inscription is a recording of a long dispute over inheritance of land, with reference to land documents in the central administration document stores: it is the most extensive legal inscription surviving from ancient Egypt.
