The Jesus Incident

Encyclopedia : T : TH : THE : The Jesus Incident

The Jesus Incident is a science fiction novel written by Frank Herbert and Bill Ransom, and was first released in 1979.

In the book, colonists have travelled long distances to an alien planet while in suspended animation. Living both aboard the ship and on the surface, the colonists have to deal with both their own Ship (whom they worship as God) and inhospitable creatures on the planet.

The book deals with concepts such as Artificial Intelligence, worship and the inherent problems of totalitarian systems. Clones and genetic engineering take up themes of racism.

The Jesus Incident is a sequel to the short story , and has two sequels: The Lazarus Effect and The Ascension Factor. Bill Ransom's poetic voice was the ultimate collaboration with Herbert and leaves the reader with haunting memories, dangerous and enticing environments, and questions about our own self-absorption with perfection in our physical appearance and genes.
