The Jesus Record

Encyclopedia : T : TH : THE : The Jesus Record

The Jesus Record is the ninth and final album by American singer/songwriter Rich Mullins, released in 1998.

This 2 CD collection, released one year after the death of Mullins, finishes a project started by the artist which he called Ten Songs About Jesus. No actual recording was started by Mullins before his death, except for early demos recorded on a boombox in an old, abandoned church on September 10, 1997. Mullins is heard performing each song on either the guitar or piano. These demos are included in their entirety on the first disc of this collection, The Jesus Demos.

The second disc, was recorded by a Ragamuffin Band (Rick Elias, Mark Robertson, Jimmy Abegg and Aaron Smith), with guest vocalists Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Ashley Cleveland, and Phil Keaggy. Elias contributes the majority of the lead vocals on the album, singing the first single, "My Deliverer," his own "Man of No Reputation," and "Hard To Get." Robertson takes the lead vocal on "Surely God Is With Us," and all three Ragamuffins share vocals on "You Did Not Have A Home."

The song "Heaven In His Eyes," was originally recorded by Mullins and the band Zion for the 1981 album, ''Behold the Man.

Orchestrations for the album, which were arranged and conducted by Tom Howard, were recorded at London's Abbey Road Studios, the recording studio made famous by The Beatles.

The album ends with Mullins' version of "That Where I Am, There You...", this time with added instruments and vocals by the Ragamuffin Band, Michael W. Smith and a large choir of family and friends. The song ends with the faint sounds of "Nothing But the Blood of Jesus," played by Mullins on the Hammered Dulcimer. The recording, which was made during a 1997 concert performance in Green Bay, Wisconsin, barely made it onto the final album. Two men, who were helping Elias find potential recordings, searched countless church video libraries, bootleg tape traders lists, professional video tapers, music message boards, email discussion lists and other sources, before someone came forward with a tape that was made at the Green Bay church. This person was able to rush the tape to the two men doing the extensive search, who then rushed it to Elias who was mastering the album. The tape arrived on the final day of mastering, just barely in time to be included.

The entire album was performed in concert at the 1998 Cornerstone Music Festival, one of Mullins' favorite places to perform. The Ragamuffins then started a tour in support of the album, called The Homeless Man Tour, which gave Mullins' fans one last chance to hear his songs performed in concert. Besides performing songs from The Jesus Record, The Ragamuffins also performed some of Mullins' earlier songs including "Creed," and "Sometimes by Step."
