Encyclopedia : T : TH : THE : The King of Comedy (1983 film)

The King of Comedy is a 1983 comedy-drama film directed by Martin Scorsese starring Robert De Niro. Jerry Lewis, in his first dramatic role in many years, co-stars. Sandra Bernhard is also featured.

Rupert Pupkin (De Niro), an aspiring stand-up comic, is determined to get invited to appear on a popular evening television talk show hosted by his idol Jerry Langford (Lewis). He meets with Langford but is dismissed. Pupkin, however, is the type who refuses to take no for an answer, so he resorts to stalking, and finally to more drastic measures, to achieve his goal of becoming the person described by the film's title.

Real life film and television producer Edgar Scherick has a cameo role as the producer of Jerry Langford's television show.

This movie holds its place in history as the worst box office return for director Scorsese. However the film was critically acclaimed and over the years has been highly regarded by critics as a highly powerful satire on the cult of celebrity and among the director's best. It is also regarded for its performances. In fact, Scorsese has stated that DeNiro's performance in this film is his finest under his direction.
