Plot
Heir to the Empire and Dark Force Rising became #1 national bestsellers. It is five years after the events of Return of The Jedi. The Battle of Bilbringi is the highlight of The Last Command and the last battle of the Thrawn Campaign in the Galactic Civil War. The battle was devised by Grand Admiral Thrawn to trap and destroy New Republic forces attempting to get a CGT array located at the Bilbringi Shipyards. The Imperial Fleet arrived just after the Smuggler's Alliance, which was also trying to get the CGT array to sell it to the New Republic.The battle went well during the first half of the battle for the Imperials. They held back the New Republic, inflicting heavy losses while receiving light casualties. Then, the battle turned against the Empire when the Smuggler's Alliance decided to side with the Republic.
Many of the platforms the Imperials were using as gun platforms were destroyed and a breach appeared in the Imperial line. Thrawn was about to turn the battle back in favor of the Imperials using the 'Thrawn Pincer' when he received a report of an uprising of the Noghri on Wayland. Rukh, Thrawn's bodyguard, assassinated Thrawn, then in turn was killed. Gilad Pellaeon, though in command of more ships then the New Republic, knew that without Thrawn they could not win. So, he ordered a retreat, leaving the New Republic as the victor, even though Republic forces had suffered heavier losses.
