The Northern Echo

Encyclopedia : T : TH : THE : The Northern Echo

The Northern Echo is a regional newspaper serving the north-east of England. Its first edition was published on January 1st 1870. Today it is owned by Newsquest (North-East). The paper is based in Priestgate, Darlington. According to the Audit Bureau of Circulations during the second half of 2005, The Northern Echo sold on average approximately 54,000 copies each day.

Although traditionally a broadsheet, from January 14 2006, the Saturday edition of the paper has been produced in a tabloid format[link]. The move is seen as testing the water for a complete change over. This would follow in the steps of a number of other British broadsheets, including The Times, The Independent, and The Guardian that have recently ditched the broadsheet format in favour of smaller page sizes.

The Northern Echo has a number of sister publications, including the weekly Darlington & Stockton Times and the free Advertiser series.
