The Phoenix (newspaper)

Encyclopedia : T : TH : THE : The Phoenix (newspaper)

The Phoenix is an alternative weekly newspaper company based in Boston, Massachusetts that emphasizes arts and entertainment coverage, as well as alternative political viewpoints. It began as Boston After Dark in 1966 as a four-page arts and entertainment publication (later expanded to a more traditional length). The paper is similar in format and editorial content to the Village Voice. Its main competitor is the Weekly Dig.

In the early 1970s, a dispute between writers and management led to a schism: writers started The Real Paper with the claim that they upheld the true spirit, while management started the Phoenix as if it rose from the ashes of the dispute. The Phoenix was distributed free of charge to college campuses in the Boston area, and this edition carried the nameplate Phoenix/B.A.D. until 1999.

In addition to publishing its flagship publications, the Phoenix also publishes a biweekly publication about Boston nightlife called STUFF@night Magazine. In addition, it operates an alternative music radio station, WFNX, which went on the air in 1983.

In 1988, the company that owns the Phoenix, Phoenix Media/Communications Group, bought a similar publication in neighboring Rhode Island called the NewPaper, which is now the Providence Phoenix. In 1999, PM/CG branched out into Portland, Maine by creating the Portland Phoenix; in the same year the nameplate changed from Phoenix B.A.D. to The Boston Phoenix. From 1992 through 2000, there was also a Worcester Phoenix, but it folded due to Worcester's dwindling arts market.

In 2005, the Phoneix underwent a major redesign, switching from a broadsheet/Berliner format to a tabloid format and introduced a new logo in order to increase its appeal to younger readers.[#endnote_newlook]

As of March 2006 on their web site [link] they claimed a total Phoenix circulation of 253,000 and that the Phoenix Web site features 90% of the paper's content posted online every week plus extra content not included in the paper.
