"The Pleasure Principle" is the sixth single from Janet Jackson's third album Control. Released in 1987, the single peaked at number 14 in the USA that summer, becoming Jackson's sixth Top 20 single on the Billboard Hot 100; it also hit number one on the R&B singles chart becoming her fifth to top that chart. "The Pleasure Principle" peaking at number 14 made it the only song released from the album in the USA to miss the Top 10 of the Hot 100. The song was yet another "independent woman" anthem often about love gone wrong built around a dance beat. This song won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Choreography in 1988 and was nominated for the Soul Train Award for Female Single of the Year.
