The Slave Ship (painting)
Encyclopedia : T : TH : THE : The Slave Ship (painting)
"The Slave Ship" or "Slavers throwing overboard the Dead and Dying - Typhoon coming on" is a painting by J.M.W. Turner, first exhibited in 1840. The pre-Impressionist style focuses on the violent power of the sea, but also criticizes the inhumanity of the 19th century slave trade. The painting was widely admired for its use of color and how the sea and sky seem to blend around the distant slave ship. In the lower portion of the painting, hands of black slaves can be seen still shackled, disallowing them to swim, though they were apparently doomed to death anyway when they were thrown overboard. The painting is currently on display at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
