The Sponge is an episode of NBC sitcom Seinfeld. It aired on December 7, 1995. It is famous for introducing the phrase "spongeworthy" in reference to the worth of an individual to have protected sex via the birth control method of sponges. Sponges are taken off the market and Elaine (who asks her current date if he thinks he's "spongeworthy") has a limited supply, thus requiring that she restrict her usage. The episode features an appearance by Scott Patterson, who currently co-stars as Luke in the WB's Gilmore Girls.
