The Strong Man Bound

Encyclopedia : T : TH : THE : The Strong Man Bound

The Strong Man Bound (The Kingdom Divided) is a parable in the New Testament (Mark, Matthew, Luke) which was supposedly given by Jesus.

From Mark 3:23-30 (KJV):

3:23 And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How
can Satan cast out Satan?
3:24 And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot
stand.
3:25 And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
3:26 And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot
stand, but hath an end.
3:27 No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods,
except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his
house.
3:28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons
of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:
3:29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never
forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation.
3:30 Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit

From Matt 12:24-33 (KJV):

12:24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth
not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.
12:25 And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every
kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every
city or house divided against itself shall not stand:
12:26 And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself;
how shall then his kingdom stand?
12:27 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children
cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges.
12:28 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom
of God is come unto you.
12:29 Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil
his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil
his house.
12:31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall
be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall
not be forgiven unto men
12:30 He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not
with me scattereth abroad.
12:32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall
be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it
shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world
to come.
12:33 Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the
tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.

From Luke 11:16-23 (KJV):

11:16 And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven.
11:17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom
divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided
against a house falleth.
11:18 If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom
stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub.
11:19 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast
them out? therefore shall they be your judges.
11:20 But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the
kingdom of God is come upon you.
11:21 When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace:
11:22 But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him,
he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his
spoils.
11:23 He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not
with me scattereth.

Similar passages can be found in the Gospel of Thomas (Patterson-Meyer Translation):

35. Jesus said, "One can't enter a strong person's house and take it
by force without tying his hands. Then one can loot his house."
44. Jesus said, "Whoever blasphemes against the Father will be forgiven,
and whoever blasphemes against the son will be forgiven, but whoever
blasphemes against the holy spirit will not be forgiven, either on earth
or in heaven."
