The Thin Man is a 1933 mystery novel by Dashiell Hammett. It was his last novel and the basis for the successful film series which began with The Thin Man.
The plot involves a former private detective, Nick Charles, and his wealthy socialite wife, Nora (and their dog Asta). The two embark on solving a murder mystery because Nora thinks it will be fun. They share a great deal of frivolous banter and snappy dialogue, and copious amounts of alcohol, but fortunately they have brains as well as wit, and justice prevails in the end.
The characters of Nick and Nora are generally seen as representing the personalities of Hammett and his lover, Lillian Hellman.
