The Wedding Singer

Encyclopedia : T : TH : THE : The Wedding Singer

The Wedding Singer is a 1998 romantic comedy film by Frank Coraci starring Adam Sandler as Robbie Hart, a wedding singer, and Drew Barrymore as Julia Sullivan, the object of his affections.

Set in 1985, the film prominently features New Wave style music, as well as varied others from that era; although some people who were alive in the real '80s have criticized the movie for feeling more like 1983 or 1984 because many of the songs and fashions featured in the movie were starting to become [[wiktionary:dated|dated]] in the real 1985.

The Wedding Singer has been adapted into a Broadway musical. The New York run has actor and comedic singer-songwriter Stephen Lynch and Broadway veteran Laura Benanti, a two-time Tony Award nominee, reprising their lead character roles. Prior to opening on Broadway, the musical was nominated for three Drama League Awards [link]. The musical has now been nominated for five Tonys: Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical for Chad Beguelin and Tim Herlihy, Best Choreography for Rob Ashford, Best Original Score for Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin and Best Leading Actor in a Musical for Stephen Lynch. [link] There is a slight difference between the show and the movie. In the Adam Sandler version it takes place in Ohio but the Broadway version takes place in New Jersey.

In 2000, readers of Total Film magazine voted The Wedding Singer the 43rd greatest comedy film of all time.

The film's two stars re-teamed in the 2004 romantic comedy 50 First Dates.

This film is number 8 on Bravo's 100 Funniest Movies.
