Theatre Royal, Bath

Encyclopedia : T : TH : THE : Theatre Royal, Bath

The Theatre Royal in Bath has been established for over 200 years and is one of the more important provincial (ie not in London) theatres in the UK, with a capacity for an audience of 950.

It runs several special festivals each year, including the Bath Shakespeare Festival, Bath International Puppet Festival and The Peter Hall Company Season. Many pre-West End (before official opening in London) runs start at the The Theatre Royal.

The present Theatre Royal was erected in 1805, replacing a former theatre of the same name, which is now a Freemason's Hall. After a fire in 1863 it was rebuilt. It is a Grade II listed building and is considered a prime example of Georgian architecture.

In 1997 a small theatre was built at the rear, called The Ustinov Theatre, named after Peter Ustinov.
