Encyclopedia : T : TH : THI : Third Street Promenade
The Third Street Promenade is a pedestrian street in Santa Monica, California, United States. It is considered one of the premier shopping destinations in West Los Angeles and frequently draws crowds from all of Los Angeles, California. Due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean coupled with Los Angeles' mild climate, it has become a popular tourist destination. It is part of a larger redevelopment in Downtown Santa Monica.
Third Street Promenade's roots date back to the 1960s when Santa Monica Mall was developed, an outdoor shopping promenade similar to the one known today, though less upscale in nature. By the late 1970s it was in serious decline. The area was gentrified during the 1980s to become what it is today.
"Third Street" currently has the original Starbucks Hear Music Coffeehouse (there are now two other locations in South Beach, FL and San Antonio, TX), boasts a Mann Theatres, AMC Theatres and Loews Theatres, and a popular farmers' market.
Larger tenants include Anthropologie, French Connection UK, Borders, Barnes & Noble, Urban Outfitters, a three-story Gap, Armani Exchange, Apple, and Pottery Barn.
Street performers and entertainers are a frequent sight on the street.
Santa Monica Place is an adjacent mall built before the Santa Monica Mall was converted into the Promenade.
Naughty Dog was located in a Third Street Promenade for some time.
