right Thomson West is the largest part of Thomson Legal & Regulatory, which is the largest market group of The Thomson Corporation. The company publishes legal, business, and regulatory information in print, and on electronic services such as Westlaw. West has its headquarters in Eagan, Minnesota and has offices in Cleveland, Ohio and Rochester, New York.

West was founded in 1872 in St. Paul, Minnesota by John B. West as West Publishing Company. The company was purchased by Thomson in 1996. Thomson West also consists of a number of law book companies purchased by either Thomson or West, including Bancroft-Whitney, Banks-Baldwin, Barclay, Callaghan & Company, Clark Boardman, Foundation Press, Gilbert's, Harrison, Lawyers Cooperative Publishing, and Warren, Gorham & Lamont, as well as publishes some Shepard's treatise titles (but not Shepard's Citations). From 1997 to 2004, it was known as "West Group."
