Thousand Arms

Encyclopedia : T : TH : THO : Thousand Arms

Thousand Arms is a role-playing video game for the Sony PlayStation released by Atlus. Though not of household fame like many Square Enix titles of the same genre, the game nonetheless is quite enjoyable and unique. The game follows the goggle-sporting protagonist Meis Triumph as he chases cute girls and a dark bad guy across the world, eventually doing what most RPG protagonists do. The game could probably be best described as a "romantic comedy RPG". It was also noted for having a large amount of voice acting, rare for games of the time, and its repeated breaking of the fourth wall.

Soundtrack

Unlike with more popular RPGs (a notable exception being the decorated release for the Playstation), Thousand Arms included its soundtrack on a separate disc, along with the game discs, in the same retail package. The interactive soundtrack disc also included neat perks such as wallpapers, bios, and character voice acting excerpts when explored on the PC.

Thousand Arms' Dating Sim

A feature in the game that distinguishes it from most other RPGs is its built-in mini Dating simulation, which is in itself considered an exclusive game genre, especially in Japan. Thousand Arms' dating sim featured dating locations in many of its major cities and towns, and a diverse cast of femme fatales. It is a rich source of laugh-out-loud comedy in the game; for instance, one of the your dates asks you what you think your best trait is during a passionate night out. You, as the protagonist, have the choice of several options, varying from "My eyebrows. I got them from my father." to "My hairy legs." In another instance of the broken fourth wall, when the main character alludes to a night of sex with a female character during a date, she states that the "game isn't rated for that".

Ayumi Hamasaki

Thousand Arms is also noted for having J-pop star Ayumi Hamasaki's fifth single Depend on You in its soundtrack. If you place disk two into a CD player, you can find a hidden track, Two of us.
