Thousand Islands (Indonesian: Kepulauan Seribu) is the only regency of Jakarta, Indonesia (formerly a sub-district of North Jakarta). The area denotes a chain of islands located on Jakarta Bay that are situated ±45 km north of Jakarta mainland. The islands have an unique ecosystem.
Contrary to its name, the islands consists of 105 islands with land area of 8.7 km². Approximately 20,000 people inhabit the islands. Panggang Island is the most inhabited island.
Sub-districts
Thousand Islands is divided into 2 sub-districts:- North Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu Utara)
- South Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu Selatan)
Trade
Fishing is the main trade of the islands. However, there has been a drop in the value of the trade due to over-fishing by fishing vessels operating in the region.Tourism
One of the islands, Bidadari Island, is a place to go for fishing or diving. The islands also hold a protected national park.External links
