Thug Life

Encyclopedia : T : TH : THU : Thug Life

Thug Life was a hip hop group founded by Multi-platinum selling hip hop artist 2Pac in late 1993. It featured Big Syke, Macadoshis, Mopreme and The Rated R alongside Shakur. An interesting sidenote is that the Notorious B.I.G. was originally supposed to be a part of the group but chose to concentrate on his work with Bad Boy Records instead. The group released their first and only album, , on Interscope in September 1994. After Shakur's incarceration in 1995 and subsequent joining Death Row Records, the group eventually went their separate ways.

Formation, the Album and subsequent dis-banding

Formed in the Fall of 1993 "Thug Life" is a backronym for: "The Hate U Give Little Infants Fucks Everybody". "Thug Life" was also a phrase to describe their attitude and view about life in poverty. Sort of a "state of mind" that a person gains living in poor, violent communities where criminals are often immortalized.

Consisting of Shakur, Rated R, Macidoshis, Mopreme and Big Syke the group eventually released their debut album, "Thug Life Volume 1", in September 1994 after it was rejected multiple times by InterRow, Rated R and Macidoshis parted ways and the group quickly disbandoned, although all remain on good terms and often collaborate on each other's projects.

It has often been said that the group's break-up stemmed from several of its artists reluctance to join Death Row Records with Shakur, after his release from Prison. Shakur was to form a second group; The Outlawz .
