Tidal friction

Encyclopedia : T : TI : TID : Tidal friction

Tidal friction is a process that transfers energy between the planets. Io, a moon of Jupiter, is the most volcanically active body in the solar system, with no impact craters on its surface. This is because the gravitational force of Jupiter deforms Io, heating up its interior. This is known as Tidal heating. Another example, more suited to the name, is of the Earth slowing its rotation via the moon pulling on the tidal bulge of the oceans.
