Timeline of alcohol fuel

Encyclopedia : T : TI : TIM : Timeline of alcohol fuel

Apart from petroleum-derived gasoline and diesel, Ethanol is the main alcohol fuel used to run cars, other vehicles, and machinery.

Present

Over the years, ethanol fuel has been about one-third less expensive than gasoline. The oil company lobby's and political pressure as well as distribution concerns have kept it in the midwest of America. Most cars are built to run on gasoline only. However Ford Motor Company makes vehicles that run on E-85. GM makes vehicles that can run on flexible fuels. In Brazil, Ford Motor company sells 1/3 of the vehicles in that country which have run on Ethanol since 1978. Large oil companies contribute millions of dollars in donations to the US politicians, while farm lobbies support ethanol. Alcohol fuel is not as commonly available and not advertised as well as gasoline, especially in the U.S. Most citizens of the U.S. do not know that many cars can run on alcohol, despite the long history of alcohol fuel. It is rarely mentioned in schools or in the news. These factors prevent ethanol from being used widely in the U.S., the nation with the most cars on earth.

Historically oil has usually been cheaper than ethanol, especially adjusting for oil's higher energy content. Both ethanol and oil supports have fought political battles, but in the end oils lower price has proven most important.

In the future experimental, more efficient ethanol production processes might prove practical, and gas prices will likely rise. But ethanol also competes with other alternative fuels: bio-diesel, butanol, and simple conservation.
