Encyclopedia : T : TI : TIM : Timothy B. Schmit

Timothy Bruce Schmit (born October 30, 1947 in Oakland, CA), the bass guitar player for The Eagles, is famous for the solo style bass. His style influenced many other bassists, including Billy Sheehan.

He is a highly rated vocalist, lending his voice for some of the Eagles' tracks, including "Love will Keep Us Alive" and "I Can't Tell You Why".

His previous activity in a recording band came as a member of Poco in the early 1970s, where he replaced founding member bassist Randy Meisner. In a curious follow-up, he later replaced Meisner in The Eagles. In 1996, Schmit sang on a cover of the Beach Boys' 1966 song "Caroline, No". The cover was featured on their now out-of-print album "Stars and Stripes Vol. 1". The Beach Boys themselves provided harmonies and background vocals on the track. Schmit also toured with Jimmy Buffett, in [1983], [1984], and [1985].

Schmit joined the Eagles shortly after they released Hotel California album and was only a studio member of the band for their album The Long Run. On The Long Run, Schmit co-wrote and sang the song "I Can't Tell You Why" and would later sing lead vocal on "Love Will Keep Us Alive" on the band's 1994 album Hell Freezes Over. After the Eagles broke up in 1980, he attempted a solo career and sang vocals and played bass for hire during studio sessions. His voice can be heard on other hits, including Crosby, Stills and Nash's hit "Southern Cross", where he sang backup due to David Crosby drug overindulgence. He was a background musician on Don Henley's hit "Dirty Laundry".
