The Doctor makes adjustments to his program to allow him to daydream. Meanwhile, an alien ship is hiding in a nebula monitoring them. However, unknown to them, they are actually monitoring the Doctor's daydreams. Because of this, the Doctor's program starts to malfunction, making him daydream more and more, until he finally cannot wake from them.The Doctor creates an extension to himself called Emergency Command Hologram, which enables him to take the place of command personnel aboard the ship in case of an emergency.

- The title of this episode is a reference to the 1974 spy novel "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" by John le Carré.
- The aliens in this episode greatly resemble the Sontaran aliens from the Doctor Who series.
