Tio Holtzman

Tio Holtzman is a fictional character in the Legends of Dune prequel series. He plays a large role in the series for 'discovering' (or rather, taking credit for) the Holtzman effect, from which the means of space folding was discovered. Holtzman is located on the planet of Poritrin, where slavery is commonplace, and works under the protection and patronage of the nobleman Lord Nikko Bludd.

Already by the time of the first novel in the LoD, Holtzman is a scientist over the hill, and is not coming up with as many new brilliant inventions as he used to. One day while going through different scientific articles from all over the League of Nobles he finds a work by a Rossak woman known as Norma Cenva. Upon realising her genius, he invites her to come work with him on the planet of Poritrin. As time goes, he discovers that the young dwarfish woman is much more creative than him, and after having been upstaged by her twice, he begins to dislike her. He downplays her role in the invention of the Holtzman Drive and suspensors, and her name is eventually forgotten by history.

Holtzman is finally killed during a slave rebellion when his personal force-shield was shot by a lasgun, which used a similar spatial effect, creating an explosion comparable to those of atomics.
