The of the Mikawa province were descendants of Fujiwara Sanefusa. The Toda originally from the Omi province established themselves at Mikawa later on during the Sengoku Period. During that time, Toda Munemitsu built Tawara Castle between 1492-1501. Afterwards, the Toda went on to serve under the Matsudaira (which soon on became the Tokugawa) very late into the Edo Period. Due to this fact, the Toda left off with a family line of Daimyo.
