Tokei-ji

Tōkei-ji (東慶寺) is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kamakura in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. It is best known as an historic refuge for women who were abused by their husbands.

The temple was founded in 1285. In an age where men could easily divorce their wives but wives had great difficultly divorcing their husbands, the Tokeji Temple allowed women to become officially divorced after staying there for three years. The temple ceased to be a sanctuary at the start of the Meiji period.
