Tony Warren

Encyclopedia : T : TO : TON : Tony Warren

Tony Warren MBE (born 1936) is a British television scriptwriter, best known for creating the soap opera Coronation Street.

Anticipating a short run for the series, Warren penned all thirteen episodes of the serial that ITV promised to air. When the show became a success, however, he continued to pen scripts for the programme until 1968, after which he retired. The fame and royalties from creating the series earned him sufficient "clout" to enable him to become involved in projects on his terms, instead of as a necessity for survival (before creating Coronation Street, he only had two writing credits to his name, Shadow Squad and Biggles, two series for Granada).

He also helped write the Beatles-inspired film Ferry Cross the Mersey in 1965.
