"Too Much" was the Spice Girls' sixth single release in the United Kingdom (fifth in the United States) and the second release from their second album, Spiceworld.

Song information

"Too Much" is a slower song than "Spice Up Your Life", and the video saw the girls going their separate ways. It could be said this was the start of their separation, because it was around this time that the girls said things began to get tough between them. For the whole of the video, the girls are all separate, and their actions and surroundings reflect their own identities. The song's lyrics also slightly reflect difficult times and the harshness of life.

The song was written by Paul Wilson, Andy Watkins and the Spice Girls themselves.

The Spice Girls debut film, Spiceworld: the Movie, features "Too Much" as the original song. During the opening credits, the five of them are performing "Too Much" on Top of the Pops, surrounded by media and photographers from various television programmes and magazines. Also present are hundreds of fans. When the performance is complete, the audience applauds and cheers the girls, and the film progresses into the first official scene.

The same year (1998) at the Golden Raspberry Awards, the girls won a Razzie each for worst actress. This documented them as receiving the most Razzies at one time (five). "Too Much" was also nominated for worst original song, but lost to "I Wanna Be Mike Ovitz!" from the film that won worst picture, .

Chart performance

Unlike their first album, Spice, Spiceworld did not produce worldwide major hits, and itself was not as much of a successful follow-up as people had predicted, but it still managed to appeal to the public widely. "Too Much" did better than its predecessor, "Spice Up Your Life", and gained a good deal of airplay, but once again, wasn't as massive as Spice’s singles had. However, large sales and the extensive amount of airplay ensured that it became a hit. It peaked at number eight in the U.S., ten places higher than "Spice Up Your Life" had. In the UK, it became a number one hit for two weeks, claiming the Christmas number one of 1997, and making the Spice Girls the first ever act to have their first six singles make number one.
