There are two major transmission facilities at Torfhaus, in lower Saxony; one owned by Norddeutscher Rundfunk and one belonging to Deutsche Telekom, Inc. The NDR transmission facility is used for transmitting FM radio and TV signals, and uses as its aerial mast a 243 meter-high guyed steel tube mast; this tower also holds an amateur radio relay station. The Deutsche Telekom tower is also used for FM and TV transmissions, but also for radio services. For TV and FM transmission a 130 meter-high guyed steel tube mast is used. this mast, which was originally 150 meters high, was shortened at the beginning of the 1990s. Prior to the reunification of Germany, the Deutsche Telekom tower was also used as a station on the over horizon microwave relay by which West Germany maintained telephone service to West Berlin.
The aerials for directional radio services are on a 57 meter-high, freestanding steel framework tower, designed to resist even extreme wind conditions; the 18 m dishes used in the microwave link to Berlin were also housed on this base until their removal in 1990.
