Total (band)

Encyclopedia : T : TO : TOT : Total (band)

Total was an American R&B/New Jill Swing female trio, active from 1994 to 2000. Comprised of members JaKima Raynor (Kima), Keisha Spivey (Keisha), and Pamela Long (Pam), Total was one of the signature acts of Puff Daddy's Bad Boy Records during the 1990s.

History

Total's first appearance was singing the chorus to The Notorious B.I.G.'s 1994 debut single, "Juicy". They also performed on the rising superstar's next single "One More Chance" and (now noticeably with Pam at the forefront) it's (Hip Hop Remix). While Total never achieved the widespread success labelmates like Biggie and Ma$e did, they did have a number of hit singles. "Can't You See", "Kissin' You", and the Timbaland-produced "What About Us" from the Soul Food Soundtrack were all Top 20 hits in the United States. "What About Us" and its follow-up, the Top 10 hit "Trippin'", were written by Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott. The group also made guest appearances on several big-name artist's singles including Foxy Brown, Gang Starr & LL Cool J.

Total disbanded in 2000, although Pam and Keisha appeared on "I Wonder Why? (He's The Greatest DJ)", a 2001 single by Tony Touch from his album The Peace Maker. The three are also thanked in the credits for their appearance on the 2001 song by underground rap group Da Beatminerz: "Anti-Love Song", although it is arguable when this track was recorded.

Total has reportedly added two new members to their lineup. One to replace Kima and another as an addition.

Keisha is married and has two daughters by actor Omar Epps.

Kima's sister is female rapper Vita, who was on Irv Gotti's Murder Inc. records, but was later dropped from the label.
