Totalitarian dictatorship

Encyclopedia : T : TO : TOT : Totalitarian dictatorship

A totalitarian dictatorship is a form of totalitarian government which is also a dictatorship or autocracy. The term exists to differentiate totalitarian dictatorships from non-totalitarian dictatorships, for instance many military dictatorships, and from non-dictatorial totalitarian governments, for instance totalitarian democracies. In modern discourse the phrase carries an extremely negative connotation.

Scholars and political thinkers have attributed various specific attributes to totalitarian dictatorships that do not necessarily stem from the definition. For instance, the influential United States national security report NSC-68 described two results of the Soviet Union being a totalitarian dictatorship: that it would have the objective of "total subjective submission of the peoples now under its control," and in regard to other peoples, it would hold the objective of "the elimination of resistance to its will and the extension of its influence and control." in addition in most totalatarian states there is one political party and whatever the dictator says goes infact certian books can be outlawed.
