Totalizator Agency Board
Encyclopedia : T : TO : TOT : Totalizator Agency Board
Totalizator Agency Board in Australia and New Zealand. Also the name given to state-run gambling organisations, some of which are now privatised. Once quasi-government entities, they have spearheaded the use of online betting in pubs and clubs.
In sports betting, the TAB's margins run at 15%.
Throughout the early to mid-2000s, the TAB in Australia was involved in a dispute with Betfair, attempting to deny the organisation access to a license in Australia. The Tasmanian government granted access to a licence in 2005 (with advertising prominent throughout the state). In a media smear campaign, the TAB at one point ran advertisements that aimed to undermine Betfair's credibility (due to horses being laid to lose).
