The demon Touya first appears in the Dark Tournament Saga of Yu Yu Hakusho as a member of the rival Team Masho. The true name of this team, however, was the Shinobi of Spirit World. Touya serves as the Master of Ice of the Shinobi of Spirit World and is known as "the true Ice master."

In contrast to his demon companion, Jin, The Master of Wind, Touya seems serious and fairly humorless. He does, however, have something of an honor code and berates team leader, Risho, about why their cheating is wrong. He has a strong sense of team loyalty, and attempts to kill Kurama after Kurama defeats Gama.

Touya first appears in the episode "The Master of Disguise." In the tournament, his opponent is Kurama, who is rendered immobile and energyless due to Gama's Makeups of Chains and of the Seal. He unveils several ice techniques in this battle. Kurama defeats him by sewing the Seed of the Death Plant into his own body and impaling Touya with the plant. He did this because his Spirit Energy was trapped inside because of Gama's Makeup of the Seal.

Following the Dark Tournament, Touya appears in the Makai Tournament Saga of the anime. He was recruited by Kurama to work for a Demon Lord, Yomi and reaches the A+ Class. During the tournament, Touya is defeated. After the Makai Tournament, Jin, Touya, Chu, and Rinku say their goodbyes to Yusuke and the group. It is unknown where they go from there.

It is assumed that Jin and Touya are friends because they are rarely seen not in each other's company. They are fellow Shinobi, but it is never stated that they are friends. He has a more rocky relationship with team leader, Risho. Touya berates Risho for cheating and trickery in the tournament, but Risho silences him by backhanding him and sending him flying. Touya respects Kurama, after Kurama chooses to save his life. Touya remarks about "not letting this slaying ruin our friendship" in reference to Kurama, but it may be that this was a sarcastic remark.
