Trace gas

The term trace gas refers to a gas or gasses which make up less than 1% of the earth's atmosphere. Nitrogen makes up approximately 78% of the atmosphere with oxygen accounting for approximately a further 21%. The remaining one percent is a combination of several elements and compounds. The most common trace gas is argon. Among the trace elements and compounds are the greenhouse gasses which include: water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, nitric oxide, and ozone.
