Trakai district municipality is one of 60 municipalities in Lithuania. It was famous early in its history for a castle built by Grand Duke Gediminas in the 13th century. Many other castles were built in the area soon after this one. For many years, it has been distinguished from much of the rest of Lithuania for its many ethnic groups such as Tatars, Russians, and Poles. It started to decline politically and economically in the 16th century. In a war with Russia, the city was razed continuously. It was rebuilt recently and many celebrations are held annually once again. The city is often portrayed in Lithuanian stamps because of its beauty and illustrious history. It is once more an important district in Lithuania. The biggest city in it is Lentvaris, not Trakai, its capital. Other settlements include Paluknys, Trakų Vokė, Dusmenys, and Rūdiškės. It borders the Vilnius city municipality, which is where the capital of Lithuania is.
