Transcendence (mathematics)

In mathematics, a transcendental number is a complex number that is not a root of a non-zero polynomial with rational coefficients. Generalizations of this concept are transcendental functions (the coefficients are themselves polynomials) and transcendental elements (the coefficients are in an abstract field).
