Opening sequence
A FOX censor says that tonight's Simpsons episode is a TV-G rated episode, with "no raunchy NBC-style sex, or senseless CBS-style violence." But as the censor says this, a hand with a sword appears and stabs him repeatedly, and the rating changes from TV-G all the way to 'TV-666". The censor dies, and blood reveals the title, "The Simpsons Halloween Special VIII".Synopsis
The Homega Man
Mayor Quimby generates a great deal of controversy for a "frog's legs" joke he makes about France, and the French president warns him that if he doesn't apologize, the French will bomb Springfield. While Homer is inspecting a bomb shelter he's considering buying from Herman, the French follow through on their threat. After the blast, Homer emerges from the shelter to find that he seems to be the only person to have survived. He misses the rest of the family, but he quickly gets over his loss and he feels happy that everything's gone, as he can now do as he pleases. As Homer is having fun, he is confronted by a band of Springfield citizens who are now mutants and threaten to kill him. Homer runs home, not realizing that the other family members actually survived the blast because their house was protected by many layers of lead paint. The freaks hope they can build a Utopian society with the Simpsons, but Marge and the kids blow them away with shotguns. Homer and his family now decide to do everything that they have wanted and go off to steal some Ferraris.Fly Vs. Fly
Homer sees Professor Frink offering him a teleporter. Bart asks Homer if he can use it, but Homer refuses. After making a pet that is a cross between Santa's Little Helper and Snowball II, Bart hopes he can cross his body with that of a fly's in hopes of becoming a superhero. Because of his idiocy, the fly has Bart's head, and the fly's head is on Bart's body. Bart chases after the fly-Bart, and they get in a huge fight, until the freak-Bart goes through a transporter. Bart returns to a normal person, but an axe-wielding Homer never lets Bart use his machine again.Easy-Bake Coven
Set in 1649, in Sprynge-Fielde, women who are accused of being witches are burnt at the stake (despite popular belief, the punishment for witchcraft in Puritan times in real life was hanging). Reverend Lovejoy warns people that there is still a witch in town, and Marge is accused of being one. Chief Wiggum pushes Marge off the cliff, and she is found to be a witch. Marge joins her fellow witches, Patty and Selma, while Ned Flanders and his wife, Goodie Maude Flanders, are scared that the witches will eat Rod and Todd. Marge, Patty, and Selma overhear the Flanders and threaten to eat Rod and Todd, until Maude offers the witches gingerbread men she made, dropping the kids and starting the current tradition of Halloween.Inspirations
- The title of "Fly Vs. Fly" is a spoof of the MAD magazine comic "Spy vs. Spy." However, the entire plot is a spoof of the movie The Fly. Bart imagining that he would become a superhero half-man/half-fly hybrid is also reference to what resulted in the 1986 remake of The Fly.
- "The Homega Man" is a spoof of the movies The Omega Man and The Last Man on Earth, with some elements from Dr. Strangelove (How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb).
- "Easy Bake Coven" may be loosely based on the stage play The Crucible, while the title is a reference to the children's toy called an Easy Bake Oven.
Trivia
- In "The Homega Man", the neutron bomb contains the Intel Inside logo on the front.
- Professor Frink's robot, Floyd (and the mop that accompanies it) is an allusion to Infocom's text adventure game Planetfall.
- The censor commenting that this episode won't have any NBC-style sex or CBS-style violence is a reference to NBC's most popular shows (Friends and Seinfeld) containing sexual references and CBS's most popular show at the time, "Walker: Texas Ranger" being extremely violent by primetime standards.
Quotes
- Ralph Wiggum: Bye, witches! Thanks for not eating me!
Chief Wiggum: (turned into a gopher) Yeah, you hags are alright! - Bart: Hey, Homer, can I use the teleporter?
Homer: Sorry, but this is a highly sophisti-ma-cated doo-wacky. If you don't use it responsibly, KA-BLAM-O! (punches fists in the air for dramatic effect, one of them goes into the teleporter)
Lisa (from another corner of the house): Ow! Someone just punched me in the face! - Lisa: Wait! Doesn't the Bible say "Judge not, lest ye be judged yeself?"
Townspeople (muttering variously): Hey, yeah! She's right! I guess so.
Chief Wiggum: The Bible says a lot of things. - Homer (after Bart goes back to normal): Well, we were lucky this time. But I've learned that some things is this universe...aren't meant to be trifled with. (grabs an axe)
Marge: Homer, what are you doing?
Homer: Something I should have done a long time ago. (to Bart) I'LL TEACH YOU TO MESS WITH MY MACHINE!!!!!! (Bart screams and Homer chases Bart with the axe) I'M GONNA CHOP YOU GOOD! THAT COST ME THIRTY-FIVE CENTS!! YOU'RE JUST MAKING IT WORSE!! I PROMISE I WON'T HURT YOU! - (Homer strolls around Frink's yard sale, whistling. He absent-mindedly walks to the teleportation machine [which looks just like the telepods of the 1986 version of The Fly]. There is a flash of light and Homer emerges from another machine a few yards away. He makes an impressed sound when he discovers what has happened.)
Frink: I take it from that impressed noise that you are interested in buying that matter transporter, sir.
Homer (looks at the price tag): Hmmm. Two bucks...and it only transports matter...(to Frink) I'll give you thirty-five cents for it.
Frink: Sold. But I must warn you, sir, this machine carries a high risk of catastrophic...
Homer: I said, "I'll take it"! - Mutant Wiggum: Really brings a tear to your eye socket.
- Mutant Sideshow Mel: Silence! (pause) You're talking too loud.
- Homer: You want me, come and get me!
Mutant Moe: Get him!
Homer: D'oh! - Frink: Good morning, ma'am. Good afternoon, sir. It passed noon while I was speaking so therefore it's technically accurate.
Homer (to Marge): He's crazy. - Comic Book Guy (talking to his comic book): But Aquaman, you can't marry a woman without gills. You're from two different worlds. (sees the neutron bomb heading for him) Oo, I have wasted my life. (neutron bomb explodes)
- Lisa: (being chased through the house by FlyBart) Dad, Bart's trying to kill me!
Homer: Lisa, nobody likes a tattletale.
