The word trend has a number of possible meanings:
- In statistics, a trend is a long-term movement in time series data after other components have been accounted for. It may be described in hypothesis testing, where a test has failed to achieve the benchmark for statistical significance, i.e a P-value of less than 0.05) but no more than 0.01. This usage is relatively common in research studies of psychology, and often indicates the need for replications and future studies using a larger sample size.
- * In technical analysis of financial markets, trend is the existing general direction of movement of prices. It is the subject of Trend estimation
- * In behavioral finance, a trend is interpreted as a three-step market price upward or downward move due to the reactions of investors as a social group to known information: 1/ underreaction, 2/ adjustment, 3/ overreaction.
- In common language, a trend is another word for fashion, and is also related to social behavior.
- Trends are a series of scientific journals of biology.
- "Trends" is a 1939 science fiction short story by Isaac Asimov.
- Trend Micro is a Taiwanese company that develops software to protect against computer viruses.
