Triglav

Encyclopedia : T : TR : TRI : Triglav

Triglav is the highest peak in Slovenia and the Julian Alps. Its name, meaning "three-headed", describes its shape as seen from the valley of Bohinj. This shape can also be seen in the Slovenian coat of arms and on the flag of Slovenia.

At the top of the mountain stands the Aljažev stolp (Aljaž Tower) which is a Slovenian landmark and an important symbol of the country.

The mountain was first ascended on August 26 1778, by Luka Korošec, Matija Kos, Štefan Rožič and Lovrenc Willomitzer on Sigismund Zois's initiative.

The Triglav area is also the origin of an old Slovenian legend of a chamois buck (steinbock, ibex, capricorn) named Zlatorog ("Goldhorn"), which is used as a brand mark of a Slovenian brewery.
