Encyclopedia : T : TR : TRI : Trigram
- ''A trigram may also refer to Bagua, a philosophical concept in ancient China. It may also refer to a three-letter abbreviation.
Trigrams and
digrams (also called bigrams) are ordered triplets and pairs of letters respectively. These are special cases of
N-grams. For example one common digram in the English language is "th". When presented with the letter "t" in the initial position of a word, there is a very high probability that the letter "h" will follow. Common digrams and trigrams are recognized by skilled readers. Recognition of these combinations increases as knowledge of the English language becomes more advanced. Associations between letters can be analyzed using computer software and the frequencies of letter combinations in English.
