History
Triple H 100.1FM is a radio station in Sydney, Australia. It began with a group who believed that the area was not being serviced adequately by the existing community radio station. When the Australian Broadcasting Authority advertised for permanent broadcasting licence in Hornsby Kuring-gai, the shared vision of the group was for a well run community station that was able to get behind the community and provide a voice for the community.
The group donated cash and individually supplied the venue for the broadcasting studio, assembled a presenter team, physically built the studio in the little spare time they had from their respective businesses. They scouted around the country for transmitters and broadcasting gear that they did not already possess. They had to complete the task of getting a studio to air in six months.
They asked local business people to donate computers, compressors, transmitters, microphones, and made a hasty application to Council for the use of the antenna.
By December, 2000, Triple H was on air. The new station caused a stir in the community due to its professional sound and attractive programming. Listenership soon grew as people began to realise that for the first time the community possessed a real community radio station. This trial lasted for a month. The next test broadcast was in May, 2001. For this trial, Phil Bromley and his team struck out in the community with publicity and advertising. Banners, T-shirts, hand bills delivered to houses, newspaper articles, and before launch day an Open Day and barbeque, where people from the community were welcomed to view the new community resource. Over May listener ship grew rapidly.
The final trial was scheduled for July, 2001. As Triple H went off air for June the listener public by popular vote faxed, emailed, phoned and wrote hundreds of letters to the ABA expressing their concern that Triple H was not on air for them.
Without the knowledge of Triple H, hundreds of school children organised and signed a petition sending it to the ABA, requesting that Triple H 100.1 fm be granted the fulltime licence.
In November, 2001, The ABA rang and confirmed that it was recommending to the selection panel that the licence go to Triple H. It was a hard secret to keep but it did allow the directors to make plans for permanency of the station.
Members of Triple H had to wait more than 7 months but finally, On July 6 2001, at 11:30 am first word trickled through to Triple H that they had been granted the fulltime community broadcasting licence.
Directors hurriedly assembled with presenters and technicians who were at the station and broke the news on live broadcast to the Hornsby Kuring-gai public at 1 pm on that day.
