Tripod

Tripod is a word generally used to refer to a three-legged object, generally one used as a platform of some sort, and comes from the Greek tripous, meaning "three feet". More specifically, it may mean:
- Tripod (photography), a device used to position, support, and stabilize a camera. Similar devices are also used for small telescopes and large firearms such as machine guns and rocket launchers.
- Tripod (The War of the Worlds), the Martian's weapon platform from H.G. Wells' novel The War of the Worlds
- A portable lifting device consisting of three poles erected like a teepee with a block and tackle hanging from the apex.
- sacrificial tripod, an ancient Greek altar
- Tripod (band), an Australian satire and parody musical act
- A graphical user-interface design system that was the forerunner of Visual Basic
- Another name for grunge rock group Alice in Chains' final album Alice in Chains (album)
- A slang term for a man with an unusually large penis (as if the penis is a third leg); used famously in the Austin Powers movies to describe Mini-Me.
- Tripod.com, a free webhosting service currently run by Lycos
- The Tripods, the Samuel Youd (aka John Christopher) science-fiction novels, also made into a TV series.
- M2 Tripod, the primary medium machine gun tripod of the U.S. military of the 20th century.
