Tropicamide

Encyclopedia : T : TR : TRO : Tropicamide

Tropicamide (troe-PIK-a-mide) is an acetylcholine receptor blocker. It is used to dilate (enlarge) the pupil allowing the back of the eye to be examined. It is typically used before eye examinations, but may also be used before or after eye surgery.

Application of tropicamide can produce short acting mydriasis and cycloplegia.

Tropicamide is occasionally administered in eye drops in combination with hydroxyamphetamine (brand name Paremyd®) to dilate the pupil.
