Tsakhur

Encyclopedia : T : TS : TSA : Tsakhur

The Tsakhur (or Caxur, in romanization) people are an ethnic group of northern Azerbaijan. They number about 20,000 and call themselves Liqhy, but are generally known by the name Tsakhur, which is also the name of their largest town.

History and geography

The Tsakhur originally lived in Dagestan, but many of them migrated to Azerbaijan beginning in the 13th century. They formed alliances with the Russian Empire during the 19th century when the Tsakhur of Dagestan were exiled to Azerbaijan. Though some returned, many chose to remain in Azerbaijan, where the Tsakhur live currently.
