Tuckahoe is a village in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 6,211 at the 2000 census. Tuckahoe is located in the town of Eastchester.
The Village of Tuckahoe has two Metro North railroad stations. They are called Tuckahoe and Crestwood.
Geography
Tuckahoe is located at (40.953110, -73.823609)[Geographic references#1GR1].According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²), all land.
Demographics
As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 6,211 people, 2,627 households, and 1,626 families residing in the village. The population density was 3,931.3/km² (10,188.8/mi²). There were 2,729 housing units at an average density of 1,727.3/km² (4,476.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 73.98% White, 10.11% African American, 0.10% Native American, 9.76% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 3.48% from other races, and 2.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.84% of the population.There were 2,627 households out of which 30.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.0% were married couples living together, 11.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.1% were non-families. 33.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the village the population was spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 36.7% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 91.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.6 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $60,744, and the median income for a family was $78,188. Males had a median income of $56,217 versus $41,077 for females. The per capita income for the village was $31,819. About 5.7% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.6% of those under age 18 and 9.1% of those age 65 or over.
Trivia
Tuckahoe was the home of fictional characters Maude and Walter Findlay in the 1970s sitcom Maude.The name of the town is the origin of a popular saying amongst urban youth culture. The phrase "tuck a hoe" is used to describe a situation where a woman is escorted out of a social gathering away from her friends by a man escaping potential distractions.
There is a time capsule entoumbed in the World War II Monument at the foot of Winterhill Road. As part of an Eagle Scout project a time capsule from 1932 was removed and preserved and a new capsule was created by gathering objects from all around the village. The capsule was sealed and presented to the mayor at a ceremony on November 11, 2006 and will be opened in 50 years, on November 11, 2052.
