Encyclopedia : T : TU : TUR : Turbinate bone
The turbinate bone refers to any of the scrolled spongy bones of the nasal passages in humans and other vertebrates. Spongy bone is also called cancellous bone, it is much less dense, and consists of an interconnecting lattice of bony spicules ( trabeculae); the cavities in between the spicules are filled with yellow and/ or red bone marrow. Yellow marrow is inactive and infiltrated by adipose tissue ; red marrow is involved in blood cell formation.
it serves as an expansion of the surface area in the nasal cavity, allowing the air moving into the nose to be warmed more effciently
