The word turn can mean:
- General
- Generally, a turn can be a change of the direction of a movement or a change in orientation, and it is often also used in a metaphorical sense, contrary to straight.
- Turn can mean to spoil or go off:
- *This milk has turned.
- In games, a game turn is a very common concept, see game mechanic and also Turn-based strategy.
- In poker, the turn is the fourth of five community cards dealt; the term is used mainly in Texas hold 'em and Omaha.
- In multiplayer games where only one participant is active at any time and the active role passes from one player to another turn refers to that period where the participant is active with the other players not allowed to intervene. For example: "It is now your turn to deal". The word go can have the same meaning. The same sense of a right to uninterrupted or unimpeded action occurs in other areas:
- *It was her turn to speak at the meeting.
- *The party felt it was their turn to be in charge.
- in Dungeons & Dragons, clerics can turn undead to destroy them.
- In geometry, a turn is a unit of angular measure equal to 360°. So, for coils the number of turns idicates the number of times that a wire makes a loop around the axis of the coil.
- In biochemistry, a turn is a U-shaped four residue segment of a protein. Turns are stabilized by hydrogen bonds between their arms.
- In computer networks, Traversal Using Relay NAT
- In trading, the turn or spread is the difference between the buying and the selling price.
- In Policy Debate, a turn is when an argument that was initially made to support a policy action is shown to adversely affect that action.
