Tvärbanan

Encyclopedia : T : TV : TVR : Tvärbanan

Tvärbanan is a light rail system in Stockholm, Sweden. Its name literally translated into English is Crossways track, which has its origin in that it connects many bus and rail lines crossways by linking together the southern and eastern subway branches of Stockholm Metro (Tunnelbanan), Nockebybanan, and Stockholm commuter rail (Pendeltåg).

The railway is separatated from roads in most parts, but there is a large section in Gröndal where the rails run on roads among regular road traffic.

Traffic on Tvärbanan started in 2000 first between Gullmarsplan and Liljeholmen, then later between Liljeholmen and Alvik and in 2002 between Gullmarsplan and Sickla udde.

There are discussions to extend Tvärbanan both north to Kista and Solna, and east to Nacka and Slussen. These extensions would lead it to have interchange options with the metro blue lines and Saltsjöbanan as well.

Lines

Tvärbanan has a single line with seventeen stations, going from Sickla udde south of the Stockholm city centre through Gullmarsplan, Årsta, Liljeholmen, Gröndal and Stora Essingen to Alvik west of the city centre.
